Remembering our good friends who lost

their lives in the line of duty

From left: Captains Bahram Yousefi, Aghil Naghikhani, Faramarz Farhad and flight guard Abolfazl Fathi

On the occasion of the loss of our four Iran Air colleagues and  friends twelve years ago, on 20th Khoradad 1375 (June 9, 1996), we received the following touching letter from Mrs. Faranak Yousefi, for which we are very thankful to her.

Dear Mr. Atrvash,

I would like to thank you for all you are doing to keep Homas family as a Union and it's obvious to everyone that without your persistent efforts we would still be far from the good people with whom we used to work and share so much; and no one would be aware of the whereabouts of everyone else and that what is going on with their lives - be they far or near.

For some time now the month of Khordad has had a special meaning for me as it has for those families and friends who lost their loved ones in the fatal accident of Iran Air's B727-200 in the North of Iran (Rasht) on a training mission.

My husband late Captain Bahram Yousefi was one of them and with him Captain Aghil Naghikhani, Cap. Faramarz Farhad, and flight guard Abolfazl Fathi also lost their lives in performing their duties in the hope of continuing the high standard of Flight Operations in Iran Air.

My intention is to remind our colleagues of the sacrifices that have been necessary to make to maintain and even elevate the high standards of our Organization along with
the hard work that they did in every area to achieve the goals that made us famous in the world - and for which they have every right to be proud of.
I would like to end this note to my dear colleagues to pray for the souls of our lost ones and to also pray for the success of those honest people who continue serving the country through this organization.

Regards,

Faranak Majidpour Yousefi

A surprise email from old time EXIR

We received the following email from one of our old time colleagues and friend who left IR, almost 30 years ago, or as he says it, "jumped ship." However, once you read his bio on his company website at the end of his email, you will see that, he has been a quite successful man, since then. Now read the letter here.

Greetings Iran Air-ians!

It has been over 30 years since I "jumped ship" in JFK! (A term used when a merchant marine or sailor bails out of a visiting ship at a port of entry, never to be seen again or report back for duty.)

I left my "post" after we arrived in New York for a two day lay over from my originating trip from LHR, onboard an Iran Air 747 on witch I was the working First Officer!

I simply slipped into the night and never looked back! Although my defection was politically and intellectually motivated I never spoke much about it nor publicized the event.

My defection did not make any news and was quickly forgotten since the "brain drain" was somewhat of a taboo subject those days. Another "disgruntled employee" who couldn't fall into the program, I'm sure!

Since I was educated in US, held dual citizenship and prior to coming to Homa had worked for two major US carriers (TWA and Continental), I had little trouble finding employment here.

Although 1978 was a tough job market for unemployed US pilots, I was able to find a job as a 707 Captain almost immediately with a freight airline that was an offshoot of Pan Am.

A short while later when that outfit went bankrupt I became an airline "carpet bagger" and flew 747's around the world with some 10 different airlines! Thanks to the unique experience and type rating (at the time) I had gained during the 9 years I worked for Iran Air.

The memory of the days at Homa was bitter sweet for this young pilot. I had formed memorable friendships and romantic liaisons. I had traveled the globe and gathered invaluable intellectual experiences and world knowledge. I simply had grown older with my adopted family at Iran Air. Perhaps my previous work with US carriers under union environment made it more awkward and some times unbearable at Iran Air. Perhaps my sensitivity to political dissension in Iran made it harder for me to simply "enjoy the ride"! The decision to leave did not come easy nor was painless. Nine years of one's life or seniority is something you can never replenish or buy back. Although I am thankful I managed to survive the ravages of the airline industry and retire from a relatively long and stable career at United Airlines, before they too became a terrible place in the "once great airlines" chapter of the world's airline history books.

As United later joined the "steal their pension and screw the employees" club, I was forced to join Boeing as a 777/787 Training Captain to pay the rent and buy beer for my six kids!

I was recently pleased to thumb trough the pages of your web site, go down the memory lane and even recognize a few. For that I am thankful. Keep up the good work and convey my regards to all the Homa family.

They may remember me as "Rusty Amin".

Best regards,

Ross Aimer

Email from Hossein Haghighi, in France

When we joined Iran Air in a group of eight, as student pilots, in 1965, we never thought three of eight, H Senemar.R. Radkamran and F. Grayely, will leave the group, all relatively at young age!! Two in lost their lives in plane crashes  when after they left Iran Air, and one died,  While we were advancing forward and gaining experience in newly born Homa we never thought the dark days are ahead of us and we will stand to watch the rapid and steady demise of Iran Air Safety, Iran Air Standards, Iran Air services, Iran Air reputation and Iran Air in wholeness

The strongest concrete walls can fall. The strongest Dam can collapse, and so did we, but the most painful stage was to part from Homa. As in where we were reborn and not to be one of the dismantling elements of Iran Air.  The next necessary step was to think about our children's future education.  Since one could see no light at the end of dark tunnel, so Homaiyan family spread around the world. I, myself now, on unpaid retirement age, finally settled in France, day dreaming of glorious days of Homa. I am married, having three daughters Yassamine, Sophie (soufi) and Sarah [read about them and see their pictures on EXIR Children page]

Finally, I would like to extend my best regards to all Homiyan as one family living in Iran or abroad and wishing them good health, good luck and all the best for their family.

Hossein Haghighi

A very encouraging email from Daryoush Maleki, in Sydney:

I saw a few more agencies added in Iran list, also interesting, information about Prof. Ghaffari. Capt Timsar, letter from Pari

Ansari and Toronto pilots reunion. All these new things made EXIR a very intersting tool to refer to. Congardulations! I know it takes a lot of your time, but this is the way to go. Every Saturday when I have more time, I go from A to Z in EXIR site. I wish you every day success in enhancing EXIR.

Mistreatment of retired and former Iran Air employees which is a loud and

A touching email from Nasser Garroussi

Our fifth world reunion, EXIR 2004, was as usual, held in Los Angeles.

Our Homai friend, Nasser Garroussi, is a regular to our reunions. However, this time, just before leaving for LA, he was prevented from traveling by his physician.

He sent an email to advise us of this and very gentlemanly apologized for not being able to attend the reunion. But he went on to write the following heart felt paragraph which is a great indication of his love for his friends:

It is highly exciting and rejuvenating to see the comrades, who have helped you in your hard journey, trusted you, loved you and grew up with you during the past long years. Being many years away from home and family, the company of my Homaiyan friends compensated for what I lacked and made my stay tolerable and joyful.  My former Iran Air colleagues are not only my friends; they are my family.

Best regards, your friend,

Nasser Garroussi

Thank you Nasser jaan, WE LOVE YOU TOO.

Today (August 2, 2003) I received an email from my dear friend, Cyrus Heshmati in Vienna, who wrote:

Attached to it was a short piece about friendship. It was so beautiful that I decided to share it with all of you. And the best place to put is on this website. Thanks Cyrus jaan.

This day I have been honoured with the friendship of  many wonderful people. Among them is you.  CONSIDER THIS CARVED IN STONE

A story tells that two friends were walking through
the desert.

At some  point of the journey they had an argument, and one
friend slapped the other  one in the face. The one who got slapped was
hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis,
where they decided to take a  bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.

After he  recovered from the near  drowning, he wrote on a stone:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best
t friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on  a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we  should write it
down in  sand where winds of  forgiveness can erase it away.

But, when  someone does something good for  us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person,
an hour to  appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Send this phrase to the people you'll never forget and remember to send it also to the person who sent it to you.

It's a short message to let them know that you'll never forget them.

If you don't send it to anyone, it means you're in a hurry and that you've forgotten your friends. Take the time to live!!!

THIS DAY I HAVE BEEN HONORED WITH THE FRIENDSHIP OF
MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE.
AMONG THEM IS YOU.

CONSIDER THIS CARVED IN STONE

Mansour jaan, Thank you for your nice and sincere comment.

This email is sent by our friend Nasser Pishva on the occasion of new year 1382

To everyone at EXIR and former IRAN AIR employees I wish you all a Happy New Year and hoping this year will bring everyone wonderful days.

Best Regards:

Nasser Pishva

Thank you Nasser Jaan for your new year greetings. We wish you the same.

The following email was received from Bahman Amirhekmat:

I too have had the pleasure of working for Iran Air for the duration of IR's operations into the United States. But prior to that and dating back to mid 1960's I had a friend who joined Iran Air in Tehran and subsequently was stationed in London and Istanbul serving in different capacities. His name is Homayoon Azarpoor, and the last Iran Air employee who was in contact with him in California was Mr. Sohrab Solati.

However I do not have his current address and am not aware of his whereabouts. Can you possibly think of means of locating him?

I did notice that you had a similar search in place for another former employee. May be you could entertain the idea of actually adding a column for locating Ex-IR employees through help of other Iranians who might be logging in and visiting the site (not to mention Homaiians themselves, around the world) Either way I wish you the best of success in this huge undertaking which is appreciated by numerous individuals spread out across the globe.

Best Regards and God Bless you

EX-IR - Bahman Amirhekmat

Bahman aziz: Thank you for your email and excellent idea. We followed your suggestion and have establish the page: "Friends looking for Friends" to publish the messages. However, we guess that our EXIR friend, Darab Chehrazi, has the contact of Homayoun Azarpour. We will provide you with his email to contact him.

Within 24 hours, following Bahman Amirhekmat's communication with Darab Chehrazi, a contact was established and this email was sent to Darab with a copy to exir.org:

I am getting fairly slow anyway, however the fact that I least expected to hear from him in matter of hours where as I had not been able to locate him in years was the other reason that I could not instantly figure out who is on the other end of the line. We then spoke for 3 hours and were only interrupted by the fact that I was already committed to take my family some place two hours prior to end of our conversation. Nevertheless promises were made to continue the lengthy discussions as soon as possible. (he like myself is extremely long winded and when starts, it is hard to stop him).

Many many thanks to you Gentlemen and hope that others could too benefit from your help and candid gestures.

Thank you Bahman aziz for your communication with exir.org
